What sends a message

Only warnings that put this site into Storm Mode: floods and flash floods, tsunamis, evacuation orders, fire warnings, damaging wind, severe thunderstorms and winter storms, among others. Watches, advisories, heat and air-quality alerts, and red flag (fire weather) warnings don’t send anything. Each warning sends one message when it starts, plus a short update if the Weather Service changes its end time or raises it to an emergency; other updates send nothing. We check about every 15 minutes.

What we keep

Your email address or this browser’s notification address, the spot rounded to about 1 km, its National Weather Service zone and county, your language, and the agreement you checked. Never your street address. Stopping alerts deletes all of it. An email address that’s never confirmed is deleted after 48 hours.

How to stop

Every email and notification has a link to stop. One tap deletes the subscription and everything we kept for it.

Don’t rely on this alone

A message can arrive several minutes after a warning is issued, and email can be slower. Keep Wireless Emergency Alerts on in your phone’s settings, and sign up for your county’s own emergency alerts.
